John has been accused of being an open theist. Here is his response:
"Thank you for asking. Because in this sad hour, in the age of the Internet, there are so many false testimonies floating around out there. Billy Graham has been accused of being the Antichrist. Anyone can say you are anything online, and it blemishes ones reputation. I am not an open theist. That accusation began years ago because I had a quote in Wild at Heart from a writer who was later connected to open theism. Once I learned of that, I removed the quote.
Now, I do need to explain something—there are many good Christian people who believe that the sovereignty of God means that every single thing that happens on the earth is caused by God. I do not believe that is biblical. For if it is, then God causes childhood sexual abuse. God causes terrorist bombings. Do you see the problem? There are theologians who get upset because I do say that human beings make meaningful choices; that not every single thing is "caused" by God. Scripture is very clear that God does not cause anyone to sin, ever (James 1:13-15). But people sin every day, and sometimes those sins have staggering consequences. Not caused by God.
So to sum up—no, I am not an open theist. I do not believe God is ever "surprised" by the outcome of events. I believe he is always ultimately in control. But yes—I do believe people make meaningful choices, because I am convinced Scripture teaches that. I believe that the sovereignty of God is so remarkable he can allow human beings meaningful choices and yet, he is ultimately in control."
